FRESHERS PREPARE FOR LIFE AND STUDY AT OXFORD

Upcoming Oxford students prepared themselves for their educational journey at Oxford by attending various freshers’ events across the globe.

Almost 40 groups worldwide held events during August and September, including gatherings in India, Vietnam, Denmark, New Zealand, France, Spain (pictured right), Nigeria, the US, Japan and Canada.

The events gave attendees the opportunity to forge friendships with fellow students and find out about life and study at Oxford from those in the know.

The University’s International Students Office staged a number of pre-departure Skype events with offer-holders in the US.

In the UK alone, around ten events took place, including a freshers’ picnic in London’s Kensington Gardens (pictured below) organised by Oxford10, the London-based young alumni group for graduates of the past ten years, attended by about 50 people.

OUS Northern Ireland Chairman John Young said alumni of different ages, experiences and subject backgrounds who attended their event at Campbell College in Belfast helped contribute to its success.

“Those who had had an Oxford experience were able to offer their reflections and observations,” he added.

“Freshers also asked a lot of very pertinent questions and helped us to understand much more fully what prompted them to apply to Oxford and what they learned from the experience.”

In Germany, events were held in Berlin and Hamburg. The dark blues outnumbered their Cambridge counterparts at the Oxford & Cambridge Society of Hamburg’s event. Their numbers were also bolstered by three current Oxford students who offered students an insight into Oxford student life.

Group secretary Brian Melican said: “We are extremely grateful to the students and also the Alumni Networks team for helping us to publicise this event - and hope to see many of this year's new faces again in the coming years."
