OUS Bristol & Bath - Welcome Drinks
The Bristol and Bath alumni group got off to a flying start as around 70 alumni attended our inaugural event at the premises of Veale Wasbrough Vizards in Bristol city centre on Thursday, 11 February. And what an evening it was!
The atmosphere was certainly buzzing as alumni socialised over drinks and nibbles before we were entertained by a talk from poet, author, actor, director, broadcaster, and screenwriter Dr Leo Aylen.
The drinks evening was the group’s first event since I volunteered to relaunch it at the end of last year and I opened the event by speaking about my reasons for relaunching the group. This includes the opportunity to use our many contacts to inspire the next generation to do what they love and find joy and pride in their lives.
We then heard from the wonderful Dr Aylen, who gave us renditions of some of his poems on topics as wide ranging as bypasses, Bangkok, the destruction of the environment and the secrets of the universe.
Fortunately, it only took the English translation and a couple of clues for someone in the room to solve the bumblebee riddle!
I was particularly struck by the image of the 'invisible' homeless veteran and I know from the conversations which followed that many who attended found something in his performance which struck a chord.
The evening continued with more drinks and lively discussions and I do hope everyone managed to reconnect with some old friends and make some new ones.
It was also fantastic for me to be able to chat with fellow alumni and hear so much enthusiasm and ideas for moving the group forward. I received some great feedback from many people wanting to help with outreach work, which was encouraging to hear.
I also had a lot of support from the partners at Veale Wasbrough Vizards and help from the wonderful events team here, and I cannot thank them enough.
