Flying the flag for Oxford

Some 30 Oxford and joint Oxford and Cambridge alumni groups around the world – from Bristol and Edinburgh to Karachi, Toronto and Moscow – hosted events to mark the annual Oxford vs Cambridge boat race last month.

Cambridge dominated as both their women’s and men’s teams triumphed on the water against Oxford.

But Oxonians did not let Cambridge’s resounding victory dampen their spirits as they cheered on the Dark Blues.

More than 50 Oxonians and friends gathered in the German capital for OUS Berlin’s screening of the competition, with two lucky attendees winning metal Oxford bookmarks for successfully guessing the finishing times.

“There was a lot of fun to be had for those who don’t usually follow the race and we made sure to equip everyone with an Oxford flag!” said group President Ottilie Klein.

Meanwhile OUS Brussels held their regular mixer event for Oxford and Cambridge alumni in Brussels, to coincide with a screening of the boat race, with 40 people attending.

And around 10 Oxonians gathered in Barcelona for OUS Barcelona-Catalonia's screening of the race.

"Despite the unusual heavy rain in Barcelona, there was a cheerful atmosphere," said group Coordinator Serena Lunardi.

"An overwhelming majority of Oxonians were cheering "Let's go Oxford! Let's go!" but unfortunately this did not change the results and we had to tip our hats to Cambridge at the end!"

Alumni group boat race events were also held in Lithuania, Nigeria, Northern Ireland, the USA and the Netherlands, among other places.

Further events will follow in the coming weeks. To find out what is happening near you, please see below for more details.

Video footage of the boat races is also available to re-watch on the BBC and Boat Race websites.
