Volcano hopping through Indonesia

From £3,985 with flights
Trip destination:

As the world’s largest archipelago, Indonesia sits between two of the most active seismic regions, the notorious Pacific Ring of Fire and the Alpide belt. Consequently the islands experience some of the strongest earthquakes and most powerful volcanic eruptions known on earth. Under the expert guidance of Professor Jürgen Neuberg, this itinerary will hop from volcano to volcano along the islands of Java, Bali and Lombok, taking in eight volcanoes along the way (some are dormant, others will be very active).

  • Explore the volcano caldera of Mount Bromo and watch the sunrise from a prime viewing spot in Penanjakan
  • Enjoy an exclusive behind-the-scenes tour into the operations of Indonesia’s Volcanology Centre, followed by a lecture with volcanologist Dr Surono
  • Journey by local train through incredibly diverse scenery, rural villages, plantations and tropical rainforest
  • Hike to the top of the Ijen crater and savour the extraordinary views
  • Experience the spectacular Dieng Plateau, home to volcanic craters, sulphur springs, hot muddy geysers and mineral lakes and some of the oldest Hindu temples in Java, dating back to the 8th and 9th centuries
  • Discover the stunning Buddhist temple complex at Borobudur, one of South East Asia’s most impressive UNESCO sites
  • Visit the active volcano of Mount Batur and its museum to learn from experts about the historic and religious significance of the mountain and a detailed history of its eruptions
