OUS Leeds & Bradford - Visit to Farnley Hall

Some 25 members and guests gathered outside Farnley Hall in North Yorkshire on Wednesday, 3 June for a guided tour of the ground floor rooms of the 17th Century Grade-I listed house.

Farnley Hall is the family home of the Horton-Fawkes family and is a little gem just outside Otley in the Wharfe Valley. The Fawkes family have lived in the Valley for centuries but the hall was rebuilt in the late eighteenth century to a design from John Carr of York for Walter Fawkes.

The decorations of the rooms have been maintained and were delightful, especially the library, which is a near perfect cube, and the drawing room which has many watercolours of the hall and the valley by JMW Turner, who as a friend of Fawkes, was a regular visitor until Fawkes’ death in 1824.

Our thanks go to Ms J Riley for organising this splendid event. After our fascinating visit, the group adjourned to Otley for supper at Kork’s Wine Bar.
