Dr Roger Collins (1968, Queens and St Cross Colleges), Honorary Fellow of the University of Edinburgh gave a superb talk on "Sheriffmuir, the lost battle of the 1715 Rising" to 17 members of OUS Tayside on Saturday, 19 September.
The lecture was particularly illuminating on the international context and secret communications of the time (codes) and had vivid descriptions of poor highlanders in their nightshirts in the freezing November weather.
Preceded by a lunch at the Sheriffmuir Inn (near Dunblane), some of the members visited the monuments afterwards.
“O zapft is” – every year Munich’s Mayor opens the Oktoberfest with this traditional cry. This is also the starting sign for two weeks of Bavarian joy and craziness, with the local Oxford alumni group, OUS Munich, right in the middle. A great opportunity to catch up with old friends and meet new alumni. Oxonians today ranged from those who went to Oxford in the 1970s, to those who will yet have to start their Freshers week.

OUS Hertfordshire held its 14th annual public meeting for Hertfordshire schools about applying to Oxford on Monday, 14 September, which proved to be its most successful yet.
More than 300 pupils and parents from 24 schools filled the hall at Stanborough School, Welwyn Garden City. The main speaker was Kate Kettle, Outreach Officer at Balliol College, who was supported by three current undergraduates. The chair was a recent law graduate from Lady Margaret Hall who had attended Stanborough School.
