Military historian Professor Sir Hew Strachan reflected on the 2014 commemoration activities of the beginning of the First World War at a recent alumni reception in Canberra.
Thirty-six members of the Oxford and Cambridge Australian Capital Territory (ACT) societies attended the drinks and canapes reception at University House, Australian National University (ANU) to hear Sir Hew’s talk.
In March the Uruguay Oxonians group met for a very enjoyable evening in Punta del Este. The format was a blind tasting of six Pinot Noir wines from the region kindly organised by Jonathan Lamb. Aficionados might be interested to know that the overall favourite was Aliwen Reserva Pinot Noir from Chile.

The alumni society of the Czech Republic had the honour of welcoming Professor Andrew Hamilton and his wife Jennifer in Prague on 5 February 2015. The Vice-Chancellor gave a talk to the alumni in Carolinum, the historic building of the Charles University in Prague, in which he reflected on the changing role of universities in the 21st century, suggesting that their main task will be, as ever, to promote innovation and openness alongside high quality teaching and research.
