The alumni society of the Czech Republic had the honour of welcoming Professor Andrew Hamilton and his wife Jennifer in Prague on 5 February 2015. The Vice-Chancellor gave a talk to the alumni in Carolinum, the historic building of the Charles University in Prague, in which he reflected on the changing role of universities in the 21st century, suggesting that their main task will be, as ever, to promote innovation and openness alongside high quality teaching and research.

On Saturday, 14 February we visited the exhibition of the Christoph Heilmann Foundation at Munich's Lenbachhaus. Christoph Heilmann himself gave us a tour through his exhibition, which focusses on European landscape painting from the first half of the 19th century. During this period painters were fascinated by a genuinely sensual approach to nature and a subjective understanding of art.
At the beginning of January this year we had another extremely enjoyable meeting and lunch with the coaches, management and all those aspiring to get into the two boat race crews. It was a greater success than last year because, on this occasion, we all ate together in the training refectory, thus enabling a much greater opportunity to mix - the whole purpose of the exercise.
