Oxford Bach Soloists

Oxford Bach Soloists

The Oxford Bach Soloists (OBS) exists to perform the complete vocal works of J. S. Bach in Oxford. Drawing from an abundance of Oxford talent, OBS provides the next generation of young soloists, many of whom are choral scholars from the University’s college chapels, with the opportunity to collaborate with a professional baroque orchestra.

OBS also exists to provide a laboratory for current research on Bach, working together with Professors from the University of Oxford’s Faculties of Music, Theology, and Modern Languages.

Offer for alumni: Oxford Alumni Card holders benefit from a 20% discount on Oxford Bach Soloist's concert tickets. The discount applies to two tickets and can be used in conjunction with the under-18s for free offer currently in operation. This offer cannot be combined with any other discounts or applied to concessions.

University of Oxford Botanic Garden and Harcourt Arboretum

The University of Oxford Botanic Garden is the oldest Botanic Garden in Britain, and is the most compact, yet diverse, collection of plants in the world. It is open throughout the year, and differs from other types of gardens as it represents collections of plants that are grown for purposes other than purely aesthetic reasons.

Harcourt Arboretum has been part of the University of Oxford since 1963. The site comprises 130 acres containing the best collection of trees in Oxfordshire with some of the oldest redwoods in the UK. Seasonal highlights include wildflower meadows, rhododendrons and bluebell woods. It is open throughout the year.

The University Club

The University Club is a sports and social facility for staff, graduates, alumni, retired or ex-staff of Oxford University, and membership is now available to their friends and family. The Club is situated on Mansfield Road, a short walk away from the city centre.

The Club offers great value, menus catering for all tastes and a broad selection of beverages, including local speciality ales.  The Club also offers accommodation  and plays host to the following sports: aerobics, dance, football, cricket, archery, tennis, squash, karate and fencing. Use of the gym is available for guests staying at the Club.

Sheldonian Theatre

The Sheldonian Theatre was erected in 1664-8 to a design by Sir Christopher Wren (1632-1723) from funds donated by Gilbert Sheldon (1598-1677) – a former Chancellor of the Univeristy of Oxford.

Its purpose was to provide an appropriate secular venue for the principal meetings and public ceremonies of the University, and this remains its purpose today. The Sheldonian was described by the European Commission as 'one of the architectural jewels of Oxford'.

Oxford University Sport

Oxford University Sport on Iffley Road offers a variety of memberships for its facilities, which include the Rosenblatt Swimming Pool, a gym, squash courts, and an athletic track.

The athletic track was the scene of one of the greatest sporting achievements in the 20th century – the breaking of the four-minute mile by Oxford alumnus Sir Roger Bannister.
