Oxford University Alumni Board

The purpose of the Board is to advise the Alumni Relations Office on strategy, with a goal of increasing and enhancing engagement amongst its global network of alumni.

The Board consists of 20 volunteer members: the Chair who is appointed by the Chancellor, six appointed by Council, ten members of the alumni community and three co-opted members. 

Terms are typically four years with an option to renew for a second term. Co-opted members serve for one year with the option to renew.

The Chair, Deputy Chair and Treasurer make up the Executive Committee.

Nicholas SegalMr Nicholas Segal (Chair), St Peter's College

Nick Segal is a partner in the restructuring and insolvency group at Freshfields Bruckhause Deringer. He is qualified to practise both in England and New York. He is a Visiting Fellow at University College London, a volunteer for St Peter’s and a Chair of the Oxford University Law Board.

Helen WrightDr Helen Wright (Deputy Chair), Lincoln College

Dr Wright is an experienced school leader, and in recent years has been Head of schools in both the UK and Australia, including Ascham School, Sydney, one of Australia’s leading independent schools, and St Mary’s School, Calne, Wiltshire, from where a girl gained entry to Oxford as early as 1921. Prior to this she taught at a number of schools, including St Edward’s, Oxford.

She was appointed to Heathfield, Ascot, first as Deputy Head and then, when she was just 30, as Headmistress which made her the youngest Head in the Girls’ Schools Association. She completed an MA in Applied Linguistics in 1998 and a Doctorate in Education on understanding moral leadership in schools, during her first year at St Mary’s, Calne.

She has been President of the GSA and Vice-Chair of the Independent Schools Council, and speaks regularly at national and international education conferences.

Jonathan MichieProfessor Jonathan Michie (Treasurer), Balliol College

Jonathan Michie, the 2nd President of Kellogg from 2008, following its inception in 1990, combines his College duties with the Directorship of the Department for Continuing Education, which shares the College’s mission to promote opportunities for lifelong learning. He is Professor of Innovation & Knowledge Exchange.

From 2004–2008 Jonathan was Director of Birmingham Business School and a member of Council at the University of Birmingham, where he was Professor of Management; from 1997–2004 he held the Sainsbury Chair of Management at Birkbeck, University of London where he was Head of the School of Management & Organisational Psychology; and from 1992–1997 he was a University Lecturer in Accounting & Finance at the Judge Business School in Cambridge, where he was also a Fellow and Director of Studies in Economics at Robinson College and a Research Associate of the ESRC Centre for Business Research.

Jonathan is a member of Council of the Academy of Social Sciences; a member of the Economic Advisory Panel for the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs; the Finance Committee of UCAS.

Jonathan’s publications include The Political Economy of Competitiveness: Essays on employment, public policy and corporate performance (with M Kitson, Routledge, 2000), the edited two volume Reader’s Guide to the Social Sciences (Routledge & Fitzroy Dearborn, 2001); The Handbook of Globalisation (Edward Elgar, 2003 and updated 2011); The Political Economy of the Environment (Routledge, 2011). He is an editor of several academic journals including the Cambridge Journal of Regions, Economy & Society for whom he co-edited the November 2012 issue on Capitalism, Ownership and Place; and co-authored Converting Failed Financial Institutions into Mutual Organisations, in 2010.

Jonathan BlackMr Jonathan Black, Director of Careers Service

Jonathan joined the University of Oxford Careers Service as Director in March 2008. He has led a transformation of the department to be one of the most innovative, transparent and engaged teams serving students, employers, alumni and academic colleagues. He publishes widely on how to innovate around the student/employer careers experience and is a member of the Guardian newspaper Expert Panel on careers. Prior to this he held a number of senior commercial roles including:

  • Senior Associate at Booz & Co, the international management consulting firm
  • Senior Vice President, Finance & Operations at two international academic publishing companies
  • Co-founder and Director of an internet start-up successfully sold to Elsevier
  • Director of Strategy at Times Mirror, Los Angeles
  • Director of Corporate Affairs, Saïd Business School, University of Oxford

He has worked in California (for four years), London and Oxford; and across Europe when at Booz & Co. He is Chair of Minervation (an Oxford University spin-out company), and has been a Director of Modern Art Oxford and the Hackney Empire Theatre.

Jonathan is a Professorial Fellow of New College, Oxford, where he is also the IT Fellow. He holds an Engineering Degree from Cambridge University and now lives in Oxford with his wife (with a successful medical career).

Nick BrownDr Nick Brown, Linacre College

Nick Brown is Principal of Linacre College where he was also a doctoral student from 1986-90. He is a plant ecologist with over twenty years’ experience in research, teaching and consultancy. His research has focussed on the impacts of major disturbance events on forests and the factors influencing their recovery. He has worked on logging impacts in Borneo and the Amazon and helped develop forest restoration and conservation strategies in the UK and the Caribbean. He is a Chairman trustee of the Tertiary Education Trust for Africa, a Commonwealth Scholarship Commissioner and a Trustee of the Sylva Foundation, a UK Charity set up to foster sustainable forest management. Nick chairs Oxford University’s Buildings and Estates Committee responsible for the construction, management and maintenance of university buildings and land.

James DancerMr James Dancer, Keble College

James serves clients across various sectors as a consultant with Hakluyt & Company in the London office. Prior to Hakluyt, he was a strategy consultant with McKinsey & Company, where his work centred on defence across public and private sectors, and on geostrategy. Before McKinsey, James was Chief Executive of a small partnership supporting clients on geopolitical topics, and was a diplomat with the Foreign & Commonwealth Office. In the late 1990s, he advised major industrial groups on corporate finance strategy with UBS Warburg. James read PPE at Keble College, and is a member of the Campaign Board for Keble 2020. He launched a PPE alumni group in 2013, which now has over 2,000 members. James lives in London with his wife and two children.

Alison FisherMs Alison Fisher, St Catherine's College

Alison Fisher has, over the last few years, built up the Netherlands branch of the Society to be one of the most active in Europe. Recent branch events have included a family picnic and barbecue, an admissions fair and freshers' party, a boat race viewing and dinner, and much else besides, spread across the Netherlands. Alison holds dual Canadian and British citizenship, and spent several years in the USA as a child. She is fluent in Dutch and German, with a working knowledge of French. Her work is as a translator and editor, with a focus on medical textbooks, journals and newsletters. She also works as a counsellor..

Oliver HollowayMr Oliver Holloway, Mansfield College

Oliver studied Mathematics and the Foundations of Computer Science at Oxford gaining an MSc in 2009. He currently lives in London working as a software developer at Goldman Sachs, having previously worked in the investment banking division of RBS and for Microsoft in Munich.    

Prior to Oxford, Oliver completed undergraduate studies in Mathematics at Bristol University, spending a year at the University of Hanover. He has also lived abroad in Krakow, and has a good knowledge of Polish and German.

After joining the committee in January 2014, Oliver became president of Oxford10, the alumni group serving Oxford graduates of the last 10 years, in August 2014.

Baroness Jay - Copyright House of LordsRt Hon Baroness Margaret Jay of Paddington (Mrs Margaret Adler), Somerville College

Margaret Jay’s career has combined experience at a senior level in Government public life, the media and business. She has also worked in the voluntary sector as founder director of The National Aids Trust and as a trustee and patron of several UK non government organisations and charities.

After graduating from Oxford in Politics, Philosophy and Economics she joined the BBC and began a twenty year career in broadcasting. She was primarily involved as a producer and journalist in news and current affairs, including as the first woman on screen correspondent for the flagship ‘Panorama’ programme. During this period she was a member of successive NHS health authorities in London and involved in local committees on health research and development.

In 1988 she was appointed as the first director of the National Aids Trust set up to monitor and develop care and information about this new threat to public health. Four years later she was appointed as a ‘working peer’ to the House of Lords by the Labour Party and held Opposition front bench posts during the 1990’s. At the same time she joined the Board of the London Broadcasting Company, and later of Carlton Television and Scottish Power. She was also on the Advisory Board of the Meteorological Office and chaired the Shopping Hours Reform Council which successfully lobbied to change the law on Sunday trading in 1994.

Following the Labour Party election victory in 1997 Margaret Jay was appointed to Tony Blair’s Government. She first became a Minister of State in the Department of Health, and the following year was appointed to the Cabinet as Leader of the House of Lords, Lord Privy Seal and Minister for Women. In 2001 she voluntarily stepped down from the Cabinet posts but remains active as a “back bench” Privy Councillor in the House of Lords.

Since 2001 she has extended her business interests as a non executive director of British Telecom and The Independent News and Media Company. She served as the senior independent director of INM – retired 2012. She has also acted as a political consultant, and as chair of the independent research organisation The Overseas Development Institute.

In 2007 she served as co chair of the Iraq Commission set up by the Foreign Policy Centre and Channel 4 Television to review the UK’s policy in Iraq.

In 2008 she served as a member of the Cross Party Commission on links between Local Government and the National Health Service.

In 2011 – 2014, she chaired the Select Committee on the Constitution, House of Lords. In 2014, she joined the Extradition Committee, House of Lords. In 2015, she joined the Communications Committee, House of Lords.

Her primary interests remain health, communications, international affairs and overseas development.

Jackie KingMrs Jacqueline Ranawake, St Peter's College

After reading Modern History, Jackie pursued a career in brand management, working at Chanel, L’Oreal and Estee Lauder Companies. Having spent two decades in the Cosmetics and Fragrance industry, she transitioned into Luxury Goods, and is currently the Marketing Director of Sotheby's Europe. Her expertise includes strategy, product development, online, customer relationship management and events.

A strong supporter of her college, she is also a volunteer on the Alumni Committee at St Peter’s.

Jackie considers London home, but spent half her life overseas in Thailand, Japan, Singapore, Hong Kong and Australia.

David LermonMr David Lermon, Jesus College

David Lermon read Law at Oxford before qualifying as chartered accountant. From 1976 to 1993 he worked as finance director and managing director of businesses in construction and financial services sectors. From 1993 to 2001 he was a consultant in the financial services industry. Between 1995 and 2001 David started and developed a software business, working in medical databases for health services worldwide (business sold in 2003). He retired in 2014 after 13 years as the ICAEW (Institute of Chartered Accountants) Director for Wales. He was Hon Treasurer of the Society of Architectural Historians of Great Britain for 11 years until 2016 and a director and vice-chair of Cardiff Business Club, also until 2016. He remains a  board member of the Vale of Glamorgan Festival.

Chris LoweMr Chris Lowe, Brasenose College

Chris Lowe read PPE at Brasenose from 1968 to 1972, and stayed on for a Cert Ed.

Instead of following a path to teaching, he found himself at the BBC as a graduate news trainee. He spent the next 37 years as a news reporter and presenter on radio and television. As a reporter, he spent many months reporting on the Troubles in Northern Ireland and, as a presenter, he worked on most of the main news programmes of the day, including Today and PM on Radio 4 and Newsnight, the 6 O’clock News  and the BBC News Channel.

He is now, amongst other things, a governor of Haileybury College, a board member of Middlesex County Cricket Club and a magistrate.

His Oxford connections go back to his five years at the Dragon School and he has kept in close touch with both the Dragon and BNC ever since. At BNC, he has organised reunions for friends who shared the same staircase as freshmen, and states: 'I remain enormously proud to have been an Oxford undergraduate and to be able share that pride and passion with alumni more widely.'

Hartmut MayerDr Hartmut Mayer, St Edmund Hall

Hartmut Mayer has been a Fellow and lecturer in Politics (International Relations) at St. Peter's College, University of Oxford since 1998. He holds a D.Phil. in International Relations from St. Antony's College, Oxford University, an M.Phil. from Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge University, an MALD from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy (Tufts University) and the equivalent of a BA in History, Politics and Drama from the Free University of Berlin. Further studies took him to Harvard University and the European University Institute in Florence/Italy.

Hartmut has also been a visiting research fellow at the Stiftung Wissenschaft und Politik (SWP) in Berlin, the Finnish Institute for International Affairs in Helsinki and a JSPS Fellow at Waseda University in Tokyo (2006-2007). In 2010 he was visiting professor at Hitotsubashi University in Tokyo for six months. He has also been a political consultant (Region Head Europe) at Oxford Analytica for more than ten years and had worked, prior to his academic career, as a journalist in Germany, among others with Sueddeutsche Zeitung and Die Zeit. Hartmut currently serves on the steering committee of the Europaeum, the Hamburg International Graduate School for the Study of Rising Powers (HIGS), the EU Studies Institute at Waseda University and the European Studies Centre at Hitotsubashi University.

CPluchinoCorinne Pluchino, Christ Church

After reading PPE at Christ Church, Corinne began her career in the Houses of Parliament before moving into the commercial sector. She specialised in advising organisations on their communications and external affairs strategies, most recently as a Director at Hill & Knowlton, the global communications agency. She developed a particular expertise in the health and social care fields, and worked with several charitable bodies that ultimately inspired her to move to the third sector full-time. She is currently Executive Director for Marketing, Communications & Fundraising at SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity. The oldest national tri-service charity in the UK, it provides practical, emotional and financial support to over 60,000 people a year. Corinne has retained close links with Christ Church since graduation.

Amanda PullingerMs Amanda Pullinger, Brasenose College

Amanda Pullinger is the Chief Executive Officer of 100 Women in Finance (previously 100 Women in Hedge Funds). She was promoted to this position on 1 January 2014. Previously, she consulted as Executive Director for six years. She leads a small staff team and manages over 350 volunteer practitioners globally, overseeing the operations of the organization, which now has over 15,000 members in 21 locations.

Amanda set up Pullinger Management in 2006 to provide strategic management primarily to not for profit organizations. In addition to consulting to 100 Women in Hedge Funds (now 100 Women in Finance), Amanda also consulted to the American Red Cross of Greater New York, where she co-founded and managed the Centennial Circle, a women’s leadership group focused on building support and necessary funds for preparedness training and volunteering in at- risk neighborhoods in New York. She also worked with Brasenose College, Oxford on their 500th Anniversary celebrations and ongoing alumni initiatives.

From 2000-2006, Amanda was a principal at Aquamarine Capital Management, where she was responsible for managing marketing, investor relations and back office administration for two private investment funds.

Previously, she was a Director of Marketing and Business Development for a number of companies in a number of business sectors including environmental services, advertising/PR and market research, construction equipment marketing, and hardware and software services. From 1999-2000, she worked for LivePerson, a dotcom startup; 1997-1999, she worked for Unisys Corporation; 1995-1999, she worked for Giles & Ransome, a Caterpillar dealership; 1991-1995 she worked for the Lefton Company, a Philadelphia based advertising and PR company. She came to the US in 1989 to work for a subsidiary of Cory Environmental, a UK based environmental services company for whom she had worked for two years in London.

Amanda is currently Chairman of The HALO Trust (www.halotrust.org), a $65million UK/US charity. She previously served on the Boards of the NYU Cancer Institute, SkillForce, and Girls’ Prep, and was on the founding Board of 100 Women in Hedge Funds (now 100 Women in Finance), serving as its President for two years. She is a member of the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts.

Amanda graduated from Brasenose College, Oxford in 1987 with an Honours Degree in Modern History. She earned an MBA from La Salle University, Philadelphia, in 1998, and received the Academic Award for MBA student of the year as well as the Beta Gamma Sigma designation.

John SteinProfessor John Stein FMedSci, New College

After preclinical studies at New College (1959), John Stein trained as a clinical neurologist at St Thomas’s Hospital, London SE1, Leicester and Oxford. He was appointed Fellow and Tutor in Medicine and Physiological Sciences at Magdalen in 1970 and although 'retired' he still teaches neuroscience to medical and psychology students. His research focuses on the role of vision and nutrition in the control of movement and behaviour in neurological patients, dyslexics and young offenders. John doesn’t cook fish; his brother, TV fish chef Rick Stein (New Coll. 1969), doesn’t do neuroscience!

ThorneMrs Anna Thorne, Development Director, The Queen’s College

Anna is responsible for alumni relations and fundraising for Queen’s, having joined the College in September 2015 from Oxfam. Anna graduated in law from Birmingham University in 1983 and spent nearly twenty years working in and for law firms, including Linklaters and Shoosmiths, initially in corporate finance, then human resources and business development. She retrained as a teacher in 2004 which led to her joining Oxfam in 2007. Her work at Oxfam included innovative corporate partnerships and latterly leading the Major Gifts team.

Purpose: The Society’s purpose is as set out in University Regulations:

“The Oxford University Society (“the Society”) shall be an organisation within the University under Council for bringing together alumni of the University and encouraging and co-ordinating their support for the collegiate University, other than that concerned with fundraising. It serves as the focus for alumni relations and activities on behalf of the University.”

1.  The Board. The composition and purpose of the Board are set out in University Regulations. Though not a member of the Board, the President may attend any of its meetings.
 
2.  Appointments to the Board. In accordance with Regulations, in addition to its powers to co-opt up to three members, the Board may appoint eight members in two categories:

a.  Four members shall be appointed by the Board after consultation with branch officers by reasonable means. Appointments in this category shall not be limited to nominations from the branch officers but the Board shall ensure that branches are adequately represented in its membership.

b.  Four members shall be appointed from candidates nominated from within the membership. The procedure for such appointments shall be as follows:

i.  Nominations shall be invited through a notice in Oxford Today (whether in print or on its website), and through any other means deemed appropriate by the Board.
ii.  Nominations must be proposed and seconded by someone other than the candidate. They must be submitted on an official nomination form to be downloaded from the alumni website or obtained by writing to the Director of Alumni Relations. Nominated candidates shall submit a supporting statement of no more than 200 words.
iii.  The Board may itself nominate candidates in this category and shall make its support of such nominees known to the membership.
iv.  Nominations shall be posted on the alumni website and a mechanism shall be provided for members to support the applications of their preferred nominees. The Board shall then appoint the most appropriate nominees, taking account of their levels of support from the membership.

3.  Sub-Committees. The Chairman may constitute sub-committees to assist in the management of Board business. Decisions by such sub committees shall be subject to ratification by the full Board.

4.  Meetings of the Society.  

a.  Open meetings of the Society may be held at any time when convened by the Board or when requested by at least 50 members. Such meetings shall be only for the purpose of communication between the Board and the membership; views expressed at such meetings shall have no binding force. The Board shall however take account of the views of any significant body of members.

b.  Open meetings shall normally be held in Oxford, but the Board may determine they be held in other appropriate locations. Open meetings shall be convened by giving at least 21 clear days’ notice, by an announcement on the alumni website or by other means approved by the Board.

c. The President or his/her nominee shall normally take the chair at open meetings of the Society. 

5.  Events and Services. Events and services organised for members in furtherance of the Society’s objectives shall normally be arranged and provided by the University Alumni Office, with guidance and, where appropriate, financial support from the Board. Where possible, these shall include an annual reunion for alumni at Oxford and/or other major centres. An open meeting of the Society may be convened at such events.

6.  The Branch Network. The University Alumni Office authorises and supports a network of branches world-wide, providing a local focus for alumni activities. These shall be deemed branches of the Society and the Board shall advise on support and encouragement for their volunteer committees.

7.  Board Business.  

a.  The Board shall usually meet in January, May and September each year. The Chairman may convene other meetings as required. The agenda for meetings shall be set by the Chairman in consultation with the Director of Alumni Relations, the Treasurer and the Deputy Chairman, having invited suggestions from other Board member.

b.  The Director of Alumni Relations will nominate a member of the Alumni Office to act as secretary to the Board and to maintain records of Board appointments.

8.  Alumni Relations Strategy. In exercising its responsibility under University Regulations to “advise the University on matters pertaining to alumni relations”, the Board shall annually invite the Director of Alumni Relations to make a presentation on alumni relations strategy and planned activities, normally at the May Board meeting. The Board shall offer comment or advice as appropriate and may on occasion report its views to the Vice Chancellor, through the Pro-Vice Chancellor External Affairs and Alumni Relations.

9.  Financial Governance. The Board shall meet annually, normally at its January meeting, to approve accounts for the previous year and agree a budget for the use of the funds at its disposal in the forthcoming year. The accounts and budget shall be submitted to Council in accordance with Regulations.
