Watching the boat races around the world

It was a day of mixed fortunes for Oxford in this year’s boat races as the men’s crew reclaimed victory, while the women’s lost out to Cambridge.

The men’s narrow win – by a quarter length – means Oxford edge ever closer to their historic rivals in overall triumphs, at 80 to Cambridge’s 82. The Oxford women’s total number of wins now stand at 30, against Cambridge’s 45.

The results were a reversal of last year when Oxford’s women’s team achieved victory in dramatic fashion over Cambridge as the light blue's boat narrowly avoided sinking in testing conditions.

Almost 30 groups around the world – as far afield as Russia, Thailand, Oman and Sri Lanka - also held events on the day to mark the occasion.

Some 150 alumni turned up to watch the races at OUS Philadelphia’s event in Philadelphia.

Meanwhile, around 50 alumni attended events in Gloucestershire; Bristol (pictured top); Vancouver; Cambridge, Massachusetts (pictured second from bottom); Paris and Zurich, among others.

Septuagenarian Peter Tomlinson (pictured left) was one of around 25 Oxonians who joined OUS Bristol and Bath’s event, together with a photo of the 1963 boat race team. Read the group's own review of their event.

Brian Melican, of the Oxford & Cambridge Society of Hamburg, said their event was a great success.

‘The Cambridge lot were obviously ecstatic, given that the helicopter couldn't fly high enough to get both boats in shot at some points,’ he added.

‘However, we Oxonians knew in our heart of hearts that the men’s eight would right the balance.

‘The exciting race and ensuing Oxford victory meant that we finished the evening in great spirits.’

And more than 40 alumni and family and friends gathered in a pub in the German capital (pictured right) to catch the action. Book prizes (The Great Rivals: Oxford versus Cambridge) were given out to four lucky winners who accurately guessed the time for Oxford to reach the finish line.

‘The atmosphere was friendly and lively and the children who attended were well behaved and watched attentively,’ said OUS President Ottilie Klein.

‘We felt the event was a real success.’

There were also smaller gatherings in other locations around the globe, including Bulgaria and Serbia.

‘Despite being crest-fallen that we lost the women's race, we were cheering the victorious men's crew and even drew looks from perplexed on-lookers at the bar!’ said Srdjan Garcevic of OUS Serbia, which was hosting its inaugural boat race event.

And nine rowers from Singapore will join the Oxford & Cambridge Society of Hong Kong in Hong Kong for the group’s boat race dinner on 22 April.

They had competed against each other in a boat race at our Alumni Weekend in Asia, held in Singapore in March.

Further events will follow in the coming weeks. To find out what is happening near you, please see below for more details.
