Oxford University Society in Cambridgeshire (OUSC) sends you congratulations on gaining a place at Oxford!

We hope that this will give you a chance to make some contacts before your first term starts, and also get some answers to a few of the many questions that are probably buzzing around in your head at the moment.  One of our undergraduate members said ‘I’d like to share all that I wish that I’d known a year ago’.

Join us at the Eagle*, grab yourself a drink, and come and meet our group for a friendly chat (look for the dark blue bunting!).

Email us on ouscambridgeshire@gmail.com to let us know that you will be coming, and to get further details; even if you can’t make it but would like to make some contacts, write to us and let us know.

We hope that your time at Oxford will be enjoyable and satisfying, and that this will contribute to getting you off to a good start.

You know that feeling, you’ve been selected to attend one of the most prestigious universities in the world, it's all coming up in just a few weeks’ time and, well, you're a little nervous! Wouldn’t it be really good to have a chance to ask some people with experience of the university for their tips and tricks on how to weather the array of challenges that lie ahead, from exam pressure to what sport or hobby to spend your (little) spare time on?

That's what the Freshers’ Farewell is all about, when we come together as a Society and see those Czech Oxbridge Freshers off whom we hope to see again in a few years' time returning as fully-fledged OCAS Members.  So why not join us for an informal event of beer/soft drinks, pizza and a chance to meet the Fresher cohort for 2024.

The event is free for all attendees, and of course you will also be able to meet other OCAS Members there to mingle with and connect to. The event will be clearly signposted at WeWork so you won’t get lost!

For those of you who had it down as the 4th of September, technical issues at the event location have forced us to move it one day to Thursday 5th at the same time and in the same place.

110 Hiller Dr, Oakland, CA 94618

Bay Area Freshers are invited to a New Oxford Student Event in the picnic area of the Highlands Country Club.  Soft drinks and pizza (including a gluten free one) will be provided. A contribution of $10 per person attending the event will help defray the costs of food and drinks - this can be paid in cash at the event (the club has a very poor cellular reception to do electronic payments).

Please dress casually to fit the typical hottest period of Bay Area summer season.

This is a private club that kindly agrees to allow its members to host events for their invited guests so we would greatly appreciate respecting the privacy of club members and any posted rules while attending the event.

To confirm your attendance, RSVP HERE by Thursday 12 September.  (Please note that your information will be shared with the event organiser Max Kozlov-Saichenko)

Parking and Public Transportation Details
Please park your car along Hiller Drive as the club parking area is only for members of the club. The club can also be reached by public transportation via Rockridge BART Station.
To reach the picnic area please use the club's main entrance, proceed down the stairs (there is no need to sign in but if asked please explain that you are attending a private event hosted by club member and held on the back lawn), exit at the lower level of the building, turn left and then another left to take a path in-between the tennis court and the pool. The path will lead directly to the picnic area.

GROUP RESOURCES
BURSARIES

The Alumni Network Supporting Oxford Students

young woman gb32afb37f

Financial support is available to Oxford students thanks to the regional Oxonian alumni group network.

We have three UK alumni groups and one European alumni group making grants available to students (who must be from the local area/country or have a strong and provable connection to the region) for projects taking place over the summer break 2024. The projects must show a proven link to academic studies.

Previous recipients of alumni bursaries have been able to research tropical ecology in Borneo, run palliative care clinics in Malta, deliver presentations at the Metabolic Engineering conference in Singapore, work with Medical Volunteers International in Greece, undertake internships in London, and work on engineering projects in Uganda. We are very grateful to the groups and their members for supporting students in this way.

Please note that the Alumni Office does not manage the application process; you need to contact the groups directly with any questions and to receive the application forms. The groups all have various methods of application, and different deadlines, so please make sure that you read the guidelines carefully before applying.

The groups offering bursary support for 2024 are:

The Oxford University Society of Cornwall, is offering different types of bursaries of £350-600 to assist undergraduates with strong Cornish connections. Please send a one page CV with a personal statement and Cornwall connections, and a one page outline of the internship or project. Please note, the projects must be undertaken before September 2024. Normally only one award will be given to each student during their academic studies. The scheme is available to both undergraduate and postgraduate students. The deadline for applications is 1 April 2024.

Find out more or please contact Professor Fenella Wojnarowska

The Oxford University Society of East Kent, is planning to make several grants. The awards will be based on the relevance of the project to the degree courses and the likelihood that the amount will be sufficient, when added to other resources in hand, to achieve the stated goals. These grants will not be limited to activities that entail travel abroad nor will they be greater than £750 per student. The scheme is available to first and second year undergraduates, and third year undergraduates who are on on a four-year course. Applications should be made between 1 May - 28 June 2024.

Find out more

The Oxford University Society of East Sussex, is offering a bursary of up to £400 to support an undergraduate undertaking work experience or an internship. The deadline for receipt of applications is 31 March 2024 and notifications will be sent out by 26 April 2024.

Please contact Tim Hancock to find out more.

The Oxford and Cambridge Alumni Club of Hungary (COACH), is offering scholarships of up to £500 to support the academic and personal development of students. Eligible students must be enrolled in full-time study and have at least six months remaining in their studies or have proof of admission to continue their studies on another course (e.g. master's after bachelor's or PhD after master's). The deadline for receipt of applications is 23 February 2024 and notifications will be sent out by 26 April 2024.

Please visit COACH website to find out more.

The Alumni Office will be mailing all students with a connection to these regions in early 2024. Please look out for the mailing or contact the groups concerned to find out more about the financial support on offer. Good luck with your applications.
